Resistance to corrosion
In 18-8 stainless steel 8% nickel, 18 % chromium provides good corrosion resistance to moderately acidic environments, whereas 18-10 stainless steel has the addition of 2% molybdenum, which makes 18-10 SS more corrosion and oxidation resistance in corrosive environments. So if you need more protection against a highly corrosive environment, than 18-10 will be a good option; also its is more costly than 18-8 SS. The costs for stainless steel depend primarily on the composition of the alloys. Alloys that are present in the steel provides the difference in their mechanical and physical properties and also the cost of the grade which is going to be produced. 18-8 steel does not contain an additional 2 % molybdenum Whereas 18-10 steel contains additional 2% molybdenum, which makes it more costlier than 18-18.
SS 18-8 and 18-10 are austenitic, and they have no magnetic properties, although cold working may have an effect on this. If the stainless steel is formed or cut, the magnetic properties can increase slightly, although they are still small.
